South of Savannah along the southeastern Georgia coastline, just 30 minutes from the Florida border, is the mainland city of Brunswick, which is complemented by its beautiful barrier islands.

As I can attest from my recent holiday, St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, and Sea Island offer so many ways and reasons to indulge with their beautifully mild weather, golden marshland, adorable shops, fine restaurants and abundant activities.

On Sea Island, First-Class Accommodations

Easily accessed by bridge from St. Simons Island, you will find the internationally acclaimed Sea Island Resort, which is known for its legendary elegance, beautiful grounds filled with magical Spanish moss-draped oak trees, five-star dining, eight kilometers of private beach and three championship golf courses graced by majestic ocean vistas in the tradition of St. Andrews. Staying at The Lodge, you will be allocated your own butler for the duration of your stay – truly the ultimate in luxury.

Historic Landmarks in Jekyll Island

Moving on to the southernmost island of the Golden Isles, Jekyll Island offers visitors the incredible Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Originally one of the most exclusive private members' clubs in the world, its members included people like William Rockefeller, William K. Vanderbilt, Joseph Pulitzer and J.P. Morgan. Award-winning restaurants, 16 kilometers of sandy beaches, golf, tennis, 32 kilometers of bike trails and a fascinating National Historic Landmark District are just some of the things offered at this legendary property.

Surrounding the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, you’ll find a 97-hectare National Historic Landmark District that is absolutely charming. Take a guided tram tour or even hop aboard a romantic horse-drawn carriage tour. Included is a tour of two of the beautifully restored cottages where you can experience what life was like for the residents who once lived there.

While on Jekyll Island, don’t miss a trip to Driftwood Beach. This spectacular driftwood landscape resembles a tree graveyard, but in the most visually pleasing way. This surreal spot is like another world and an extraordinary site to take photos.

Shopping and Dining in St. Simons

St. Simons Island is the largest barrier island in the Golden Isles with pristine stretches of marshland and some of the best shopping and dining options on the Georgia coast as well as natural beauty, sandy beaches, a fishing pier, a cinema and theater.

One thing you notice upon your arrival to St. Simons Island is that almost all of the shops and restaurants are family-owned businesses rather than corporate chains. This is something I am always glad to see. The friendliness and level of care from the staff is a great reflection of this, and I was served some of the tastiest food of my whole trip to Georgia.

The Golden Isles offer an idyllic retreat for those looking for a peaceful getaway with varied activities, fantastic restaurants, interesting culture and friendly people. Come and experience everything these wonderful islands have to offer.
